Glider Pilot Medicals

New Medical Requirements become effective on 1st March 2003.

Are you up to date?

All gliding members should ensure that they meet these requirements before flying after

28th February 2003. You must notify the office

of your current status.

New glider pilots must declare and obtain a GP endorsement of fitness

to fly before first flying solo. This declaration remains valid until the age

of 45, at which time a new declaration must be made.

Again, GP endorsement is required.

Declarations must then be renewed (with a GP endorsement) at ages

45, 50, 55, 60 and 65, then annually. A renewal is also required before

a pilot flies after a serious illness.

All solo glider pilots must meet DVLA Group 1 (private drivers) standard.

Instructors and P1 must meet DVLA Group 2 (professional drivers) standard.

Existing declarations remain valid until a pilot reaches a birthday at which a renewal is required under the new rules. For example, a pilot aged 17 does not need to comply with the new rules until reaching the age of 45; a pilot aged 52 need not comply until 55; etc.

Holders of NPPL and PPL medicals supersede these new rules.

It is every glider pilots responsibility to ensure that their medical is valid.

It is every glider pilots responsibility to inform Bidford Office of the date that their renewal is due and they must not to fly solo when the medical is out of date.

Copies of declarations / notes can be obtained from the office.

Potential new solo pilots must have a GP endorsement before they can fly solo.

Make sure you have yours!
